Culture activities available at Fourways High

Fourways High School boasts a unique and talented school band, a rarity in Johannesburg. Composed primarily of dedicated student musicians, with a few teacher mentors, our band elevates school events to new heights.

From grade 8, aspiring musicians can join the band and hone their skills. Our band performs at prestigious events like academic assemblies, matric valedictions, and talent shows. The annual major production, a demanding feat of musical prowess, showcases the band’s versatility and dedication.

We welcome musicians of all abilities, from violinists and pianists to drummers, guitarists, and woodwind players. We encourage passion, hard work, and teamwork, fostering a supportive and inspiring environment for young musicians.

The Fourways High School band is more than just music; it’s a testament to the power of youthful talent and collective effort.

The choir, initially a small gathering of music lovers, has blossomed into a vibrant and thriving cultural activity. Through unwavering dedication and rigorous practice, the choir has steadily progressed, achieving significant milestones.

Our inaugural competitive performance at the July Eisteddfod marked a promising beginning, with a B+ rating. This early success ignited a passion within the choir members, inspiring them to strive for even greater heights. Building on this momentum, we eagerly participated in the Art@manor performance and the October talent show, showcasing our talents to a wider audience.

Fourways High School has a strong tradition of excellence in debating. Our teams consistently rank among the top in provincial tournaments, and many of our speakers represent the school at national and international levels.

Debating is a rigorous activity that develops critical thinking, public speaking, and strategic skills. Teams of five prepare and deliver persuasive arguments, adapting to spontaneous challenges during debates. The intense training schedule, including weekly practice sessions and regular tournaments, fosters a competitive and supportive environment.

By participating in debating, our students gain invaluable skills that extend beyond the classroom, preparing them for academic and professional success.

Fourways High School’s Entrepreneurs’ Club empowers young minds to explore their entrepreneurial spirit. Through monthly market days, students learn valuable business skills, from product development to sales and marketing. A portion of the profits is donated to local charities, fostering a sense of social responsibility.

The Entrepreneurs’ Committee, composed of dedicated students, organizes and manages these market days. They also host workshops featuring industry experts, providing invaluable insights and motivation. By participating in the JSE game, students gain practical experience in stock market investing.

The Entrepreneurs’ Club offers a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, network with peers, and cultivate a mindset of innovation.

Fourways High School fosters a vibrant journalism culture, empowering students to develop essential skills for future success. By engaging in journalistic writing and photojournalism, students gain hands-on experience and hone their creativity.

    Reporting

Aspiring journalists contribute to Legends Magazine, a student-run publication that chronicles school events and offers insightful commentary. Through writing articles, students learn to research, analyze, and communicate effectively.

    Photography

The school’s photography program captures the essence of school life through captivating images. Photojournalists document a wide range of events, from academic achievements to sporting victories, and their work is showcased in various media, including the school magazine, yearbook, website, and social media platforms.

By participating in these activities, students not only develop technical skills but also cultivate a keen eye for detail and a passion for storytelling.

Major Production is more than just a show; it’s an experience that fosters creativity, passion, and personal growth. By participating, you’ll challenge yourself and inspire others to reach new heights.

Through Major Production, you’ll develop a sense of belonging, enhance your skills, boost your self-esteem, and learn valuable qualities like professionalism, commitment, and self-discipline. We encourage every student to audition, regardless of experience level, to embrace this transformative opportunity.

Beyond the stage, Major Production offers a variety of behind-the-scenes roles:

    • Backstage Crew: Manage the flow of the show, ensuring a seamless performance.
    • Set Construction: Design and build the physical environment that brings the story to life.
    • Set Painting: Create visually stunning backdrops and props.
    • Sound and Lighting: Control the auditory and visual elements, enhancing the overall experience.

Each year, we take on new challenges and strive to produce exceptional shows. Join us and be part of something truly special.

Did you know that public speaking is one of the most common fears – a staggering 73% of people experience public speaking anxiety, also known as glossophobia!

At Fourways High, we’re empowering our students to conquer this fear and unlock their full potential. Our public speaking extramural offers invaluable skills such as:

    • Effective speech writing: Learn how to craft compelling messages that captivate your audience.
    • Engaging presentation techniques: Master the art of delivering dynamic and persuasive presentations.
    • A lifelong love of reading: Develop a passion for literature that fuels critical thinking, analysis, and creativity.

By overcoming public speaking anxiety, our students gain confidence, improve communication skills, and open doors to countless opportunities.
