Athletics
Athletics has always been an asset amongst the Fourways sports on offer, and for nearly two decades Fourways High has been firmly positioned in the A-League of the co-ed schools’ competition. The third term traditionally dedicates itself to athletics and the fastest and fittest learners in the school have an opportunity to show their mettle and to earn accolades in a variety of areas.
Since 2018, the introduction of track and field have created a myriad of opportunities as learners have prospects in the first and fourth term to compete. In addition to sprints and middle distance running, comes long jump, high jump, hurdles, shot put and a sprinkling of other events introducing learners to these Olympic sports disciplines which could previously only be observed on television and the internet.
Track and field is well known to be a great way of preparing for other sports because of its functional strength, speed and power development. Even the power events are a great way to spend the off season for the serious rugby players, and cricket players will be amazed at the increased distance they can achieve with a cricket ball after a season of javelin practise!
Fourways High has been in the hands of Fitness For Africa (FFA) Coaching for the past 17 years, and also some very willing and able and passionate staff members! FFA have Athletics South Africa qualified coaches and experience with athletes from absolute beginners up to Olympic and World Championship level.
The benefits of athletics are far reaching and include discipline, tenacity, patience, commitment, hard work, team efforts, all the way to overcoming obstacles and setbacks to the thrill of victory! Learners who make the commitment from junior level (grade 8 and 9) will learn that consistency and commitment will always be rewarded in any area of life. None more so than athletics where cardiovascular fitness, strength, speed and power will develop from year to year, and they can expect excellent results in their senior years!
Sport really is a metaphor for life and an important accomplice to academic endeavours offering innumerable opportunities to become well-balanced young adults after leaving school.
Over the years, several Fourways athletes who have embraced the sport of athletics have been rewarded with bursaries, sponsorships and other opportunities after their high school career.
