Band
Very few schools in South Africa are able to boast of the calibre of their school band as Fourways High is, it truly is one in a million in Johannesburg. Fourways High School band consists of exceptionally talented Fourways learners plus a few teachers. Where most schools hire in professional bands, Fourways High School make use of our very committed and talented youngsters at our school. We call them home grown – where some musicians start their instrument in their grade 8 year and work hard enough to join the band before they leave school.
We perform at many of the prestigious academic assemblies and matric valedictions as well as performing live music for the school talent shows. The biggest event for the year is undoubtably the major production, where the band can play anything up to 60 songs in an evening. As daunting as this may seem, somehow these incredible young musicians’ mange it – this is of course with months practice. In the end, our performances are always well received and become a highlight of our shows.
The band accepts musicians who play a variety of instruments ranging from violin to piano, drums to guitarists and bass, saxophone and trumpets. We are even looking for the next best wood block and triangle player. We encourage as many as are capable. It’s quite literally all about the music and how this can positively impact on our young aspiring musicians. All that participate need to work hard and passionately and always ask when they need help. This way we encourage them to improve their skills and, also learn to work together. The Fourways band is truly an incredible team in our school and long shall it live.
