Beyond the Badge: Leadership as Shared Responsibility.

Further to the announcement of the 2025/2026 Councillors.

The buzz surrounding leadership elections is undeniable. Whether it’s for class representative, student council, or an executive position, we witness passionate campaigns, earnest promises, and hopeful candidates vying for your trust. Achieving these roles is rightly seen as a significant honour, marked by sincere intentions to serve.

However, true leadership is measured not by the campaign or the initial applause, but by the consistent actions that follow. We’ve all observed situations where the standards leaders pledged to uphold seem to apply differently once they are in position. Explanations like “I didn’t know” can ring hollow when applied to matters within their responsibility. Furthermore, it’s equally puzzling when individuals work diligently to elect someone, only to then spend their energy criticising or undermining that leader’s efforts. Why elevate someone just to make their role harder?

While this reflection is crucial for our elected student leaders – reminding them that leadership demands fairness, consistency, accountability, and leading by the example they promised – this message extends far beyond them. It is a call to our entire school community: staff, parents, and students alike.

Leadership is a partnership. Students, you play a vital role. You entrusted your peers with leadership positions to help maintain our school rules and community standards. Therefore, it is inconsistent – and counterproductive – to then deliberately break those same rules or hinder your leaders’ efforts to uphold them. If we expect our leaders to serve responsibly, we must equally commit to supporting them by respecting the rules and contributing positively to our shared environment. Parents and staff, your support and reinforcement of these shared values at home and throughout the school day are fundamental to this partnership.

This dynamic reminds me of Roger McGough’s insightful poem, “The Leader,” which captures the initial excitement and the subsequent uncertainty:

    I wanna be the leader.
    I wanna be the leader.
    Can I be the leader?
    Can I? I can?
    Promise? Promise?
    Yipee, I’m the leader!
    I’m the leader!
Okay… now what do we do?

That final line – “Okay… now what do we do?” – is indeed the crux of the matter. The title, the badge, the position – these are beginnings, not endpoints. The real challenge, for every leader and for every member of the community they serve, is answering: What do we do next?

    • Leaders: How will you lead with integrity, fairness, and consistent action?
    • Students: How will you actively support the leaders you chose and respect the community standards?
    • Staff & Parents: How will we model and encourage responsible citizenship and support constructive leadership?

Let’s move beyond the excitement of elections and focus on the sustained effort required. Let’s collectively build a school culture where leadership truly means service and responsibility, and where every member of our community – leaders and followers – actively contributes to a respectful, fair, and positive environment for all.

Let’s answer the question, “What do we do?” together, with purpose and respect.
